this paper first discusses the essence and characters of the city as a complex system, introduces the Cellular Automata (CA) Theory and Multi-Agent System (MAS) Theory which based on bottom up idea of complex system research, interrelated research work about urban problem is also introduced. The second part selects the problem of city sprawl and the spatial layout of the urban commercial centers as research objects , the first to delve the relationship between the interior social structure of agents composing urban system and the urban sprawl layout the second to delve the inevitability of commercial agents to assemble and the related rules. By parsing the object a model framework based on CA and MAS is built up to describe the research object, then the simulation is implemented on the NetLogo Platform by programming , after this are the summarize of the simulating results and discovery. At the end of the paper the advantages and the criticisms on computer simulation in the field of urban planning research are discussed.
