With the development of economy, power supply in China is far behind demand. Peakmodulation is undergoing extreme stress. As an advanced regulation measure in modernpower system, pumped storage station which can effectively increase economies andreliability is widely used in developed country. Recently China also attaches importance topumped storage station projects. It is of great value to study excitation controller and staticfrequency converter stating in pumped storage station. Pumped storage unit has diversiform work conditions, the requests for excitationcontroller are including starting and electricity braking, its logic conversion is complicateand high reliability is needed; when pumped storage unit works as motor ,it is started bystatic frequency converter, however, harmonics are unavoidable. In this paper, those keytechnique problems are to be solved. Firstly, the difference between pumped storage stationand traditional hydropower station is investigated. Secondly, the necessity of PSS used inpumped storage units is analyzed, and then hardware and software scheme of excitationcontroller based on 16 bit single-chip is presented in the first part of this paper. Because the control of excitation under pumping is intricate, the last part of this paperconcentrates on static frequency converter starting. An integrative hardware and softwarescheme of static frequency converter is given. A model of starting of pumped storage unit isestablished by MATLAB software. Finally, the harmonics elimination of the system isstudied, then two different harmonics mitigation methods is brought forward.
