Genetic algorithms was firstly introduced by J.Holland in 1975 which is a highly-paralleled, stochastic, self-adapted optimization algorithms using Darwin's "survival of the fittest" idea. He expressed the solution of problem with the process of the survival of the fittest chromosome. Through the evolution of generations of chromosome, including operation of reproduction, crossover and mutation and finally transformation to the fittest individual, we can get the optimization or satisfied solution. GA has a lot of original advantage and characteristics and was widely applied in many fields. This paper tries to study the structural optimization via the GA: firstly, analyze and study primarily the status quo and the development of structural optimization; then, deeply study the concept, operation process, characteristics and development of GA, and finally, basic GA process is discussed through engineering examples.
