As a new international standard in substation automation, the standard series IEC61850 "Communication networks and systems in Substations" reflects the trend of substation automation communication technology, and arouses extensive concern of people who are engaged in Power System field. The main content of this paper which has been focused on analyzing and researching the architecture of IEC61850 standard series is as followed: This dissertation introduces the background of IEC61850 standard series, its main character and its status; analyzes the mapping process, the structure of communication stack and corresponding encoding rules between process level and bay level, bay level and substation level; designs the flow chart in client/server communication mode and programming the client software whose communication process with the server software keeps to the definition of IEC61850-8-1; views the application prospect of IEC61850 standard series and the difficulties during its realization process.
