Structure design takes most of the time in the automotive-panel-die design process. The efficiency of traditional manual modeling method and the reuse capacity of the design result are very low. The method and technology to improve the efficiency and quality of automotive-panel-die-structure design is proposed in this paper.The method of die-structure design is summarized and a method of case-based is put forward based on the summary. The key technique to establish and modify die case is analyzed. As an example, a kind of single-motion stretching die is studied. We analyze the multiform kind of structure, conclude the structure-design process of single-motion stretching die, and use top-down-assembly and parametric-feature-modeling method to establish the detailed die structure. The library of standard parts and standard structure parts is established. A manage tool is developed to query and load the parts.Based on assembly model, the variant design of automotive-panel-die structure has been realized. The relations between the model of die-surface and the feature of die-components are established. Thus the assembly model of die structure has been set up. When a new die-surface model has been designed, a new die structure is almost automatically designed with human-computer interaction. To the deficiency of the algorithm of sewing die-surface model, an algorithm to reconstruct die surface based on Reverse Engineering is proposed. Regarded as entity, the die surface is reconstructed by scattering the surface using section plane and skinning the surface by the section strings.On the platform of Unigraphics, adopting Visual C++ and Unigraphics Open/API, the 3D design of typical automotive-panel-die structure is realized.
