With the development of engines (lighter weight, higher heat and pressureresistance, greater power output, and longer life), and consequently a harderenvironment for piston rings, higher and higher requirements have been imposed onthe functions of piston rings. The design of piston rings is conducted in accordance with the environment thatthey are in and the functions that are required, as well as with adequate design basis, theoretical calculation and experiential data. In reality, however, piston ringsmanufactured in this way cannot meet the requirements of the performance perfectlywhen installed in the engine. The reason why piston rings are chosen first to receive the modification lies inthe simplicity of their structure. If such malfunctions with an engine as the leakage ofgas or oil occur, people tend to modify the piston ring first when they are open to twooptions, either to modify the piston ring or to modify the cylinder stator. Apart from the structural factor involved in the modification of piston rings, thedistribution of piston ring's radial pressure curve is another important factor that isoften considered in the modification of piston rings. That is, some important problemsare often solved by modifying the distribution of the piston ring's pressure curve, forthe performance of piston rings and the long, stable and reliable display of the theirperformance are closely related to it. It requires testing on the distribution of the pressure curve to see whether themanufactured piston rings meet the distribution requirements of the pressure curveand what distribution of the pressure curve a piston ring should have to meet thedemands of the engine with certain special performance. Therefore, it is quitenecessary to develop a detecting instrument to conduct the real testing on the pressurecurve. This project aims to develop an applicable detecting instrument and thus fill the IIdomestic blank in this field. This paper introduces the development and theapplication of the detecting instrument from three respects: 1, the working principle ofthe detecting instrument; 2, the processing of the detecting instrument's measurementdata; 3, the testing cases of the detecting instrument.
