| As a culture movement, modern design has been applied in all kinds of areas widely, such as architecture design, industry design, advertisement, art and so on, these are all profited from it. Modern design impregnate energy into the development of society, and exert tremendous effects. Inevitably, LA(landscape architecture) is influenced by it as well.Our traditional LA has a long history, and contains plentiful art finesses. While we are wondering at the concise sculpt, perfect function, new ideal, multiplex creation of western modern LA, they are also appeal us to research endlessly to promote our LA's development.Modern design turn modern LA design into mainstream fashion, and bring the new design means and ideals to modern LA design. Consequently modern LA design and application of modern design should base on the deep understand of modern design. This paper begin with the definition of modern design and interpret the process of modern design's development following. Basing on the history of modern design, we summarizes a serial of modern design theories which originate from architecture, art and industry's design. But the process of the modern landscape's development is the application of the theories' essential.It is impossible to direct our LA and apply the modern LA to our works if we don't understand the development of modern LA. The paper discusses the typical works and important period of modern LA development process. Then analysis composition theories in LA design with samples, emphases on sculpt composition, color composition and solid composition. As a result we try to establish a foundation of our LA design theory. The following part of the paper is the application which about planning of Gold Leaf College of North-West Industrial University of modern LA theory. Through this practice, we understand modern LA design theories further. At end of the paper, we educe several principles with which modern LA design should comply.
