With the train speed rising continuously , security detection has been more and more important, so Railway Department made an project about it. One of the most important elements in the automatic security decetion project is flange geometry size, such as flange height, flange width, which has a marked influence on the stability of train and the comfortability of passenger, since the criterion and limit have been formulated and checked regularly, the research of real-time automatic detection system will contribute to the efficiency improvement, period prolowger and train security detection automation.The paper design a computer image gathering system using CCD camera and rectify the gathered image based on digital image processing technology. Through the analysis and computation of the image, We get the flange size. We revise the camera lens modle and employ an approach based on edge strength threshold to choose the threshold value in image processing.Our system achieve the function of flange geometry size automatic detection and storage, with the characteristic of high efficiency, acc~ Uracy, meanwhile reduce the error cause by man and lighten the labor strength and workload. In the end, the system wasproved to satisfy the requirement of railway department through installation, debugger, test and detection, with the precision being less than 0.3mm.
