SMW engineering method is a new construction technology. SMW engineering method is not been widely used in engineering due to the limitation of many factors. For example, the design theory, construction equipment and management level are not advanced. In consideration of design theory getting behind engineering practice, a whole design theory and calculation method will be researched based on practice experience and laboratory test.The strength theory and constitutive relation of cement soil, as materials of retaining wall, are set forth systematically. The mechanics characteristic of cement soil is summarized based on test result.Resulted from bending test of the beam composed by H-shaped steel and cement-soil, the mechanics characteristic and the mode of failure are analyzed. Comparing single H-shaped steel with composite beam, the law of rigidity and strength increasing and the rigidity contribution of cement soil are researched. Then the mechanics characteristic of composite structure are made clear farther.Based on pull-out testing results of H-shaped steel in SMW composite retaining wall, the pull-out law of H-shaped steel is obtained by comparing the ideal curve of pull-out force and displacement with that of testing results. A check computation is given to evaluate the recycle of H-shaped steel.A new design theory and calculation means of SMW engineering method is presented, in which the stiffness of the cement soil and interaction behavior between the cement soil and H-shaped steel are considered based on laboratory test and correlative experience. Moreover, founded on the construction case of SMW engineering method. the PLAXIS FEM code was used to analyze the excavation and the numerical predictions were in reasonable agreement with the measured results. Some valuable conclusions can be gained, which supply references to the design and construction of SMW engineering method.
