With the economic globalization and sustained growth of logistics the port operation is becoming heavier accordingly. The emergence of port crane with higher speed and larger size means a new demand for the management of operation device. As a key part of the port crane, slew bearing's fault has a negative impact on the efficiency of the whole product line, as well as great direct and indirect loss. Because of its compact structure, direct observation and frequent disassembly are not available for monitoring and routine management. Thus it is necessary to find out a reasonable approach for this subject.Condition monitoring and fault diagnosis, which are now applied in various fields, have acquired exciting achievements in speed and scale of development since 1960s except for port crane, a kind of special devices for port operation. So the research on condition monitoring and fault diagnosis for key parts of operation devices is promising and full of potential.Based on dynamics and the theory of signal analysis, the paper discusses the structural characteristic and condition monitoring of slew bearing with mechanical measurement and experiment technology according to vibration. Based on the vibration model and testing data, the paper provides a systematic way to not only the choice of testing parameter but also drawing the conclusion.The paper has three parts. First, the paper discusses the vibration mechanism of slew bearing, analyzes features of vibration and signal and deduces the formula of feature frequency and inherent frequency. Second, the paper studies the testing project by orthogonal test and the method of principle components analysis to pick up the optimum testing condition. Third, the paper analyzes the signal from vibration energy and abrasion degree. Besides, envelop estimation is also used to pick up the information of fault and failure.
