Railway transportation is the main means of transportation and the artery of the national economy. There is a meter gauge railway line of 827 kilometers in KunMing Railway Bureau, which is the only meter-gauge line in China. The line links to Vietnam through Hekou and is an important international passageway. The existing freight car adopts the relative standards of standard gauge due to without standards of meter gauge in china, and many shortages are found such as heavy tare weight, redundant intensity and rigidity. With the development of China railway towards high speed and heavy duty, those shortages have not met the service requirement of the existing meter gauge freight cars. Therefor, it is necessary to study the relevant design standard of the meter gauge freight car and apply the study conclusion into the structural design.To solve the above-mentioned problems, studies are carried out for the intensity design and accreditation test in this dissertation and apply the research results to the structure optimization of meter-gauge covered car of 14t axle-load.The following works are carried out in the dissertation: The study of meter-gauge freight car intensity design and accreditation test Specifications; The structural design of meter-gauge covered car of 14t axle-load; The Finite Element Analysis of car body structure of meter-gauge covered car of 14t axle-load; The structure optimization of meter-gauge covered car of 14t axle-load. Specification of intensity design for meter-gauge freight wagons is a combinationof the theoretical calculations, long-term tests and the data of the application and maintenance of the rolling stock. In this thesis, according to rules of intensity design for standard gauge freight wagons, the major difference between the standard gauge and the meter-gauge was analyzed. Especially, the longitudinal load is researched, and simulation programs are designed, the maximal longitudinal force between couplers is calculated in the situations of traction and brake. And based on the application situations of KunMing Railway Bureau, the specification for the intensity design and accreditation test about the meter-gauge freight car is established.he type of P31 covered wagons are the main meter-gauge freight wagons running at present. But the car body structure is not very well and the tare weight is too weighty. Aiming at above-mentioned problems, the structure was optimized by the I-DEAS software, a new pattern meter-gauge covered wagon was put forward, which has light tare weight, reasonable structure and well vehicle dynamic performance. The test results show that the gross weight increases 8 tons while the tare weight reduces nearly 1 ton, and the tare ratio reduces from 0.52 to 0.4. It enables the carry load increases 9 tons to up 40t which greatly improves the transportation efficiency. At the same time, since the suppleness of car increases, the derailment stability is improved.
