As a new kind of proportional element, Stepping Proportional Electromagnet (SPE) is being more and more widely used in many fields such as hydraulic transmission, pneumatic transmission, automatic control and so on. It can change electrical energy into mechanical energy, and the output is force which varies proportionally only with the input signal. It has some advantag~E such as small volume, low price, quick reaction, no pollution and easy control. In this paper, three jobs were done. First the analysis of the structure and the study of the electromagnetic force. Second the calculation of the electromagnetic force. Last the optimization of the structure. Here a solenoid electromagnet system without floor is studied. The force mainly comes from leakage flux. According to Maxwell抯 formula on electromagnetic force, it can be seen that there is some relation between the direction of the magnetic line of force and the force. Through cutting some slots on both the sides of the armature and the yoke, a greater force can be gain. The force changes with the changing of the shape and the size of the slot. The parameter of the structure is also been optimized according to orthogonal optimization method and Tabu search technique. At last, the dyn~i駃c characteristics are studied and an ideal result is achieved, which has been proved feasible by experiment. In order to get more information of the dynamic procedure; the force, the velocity, the displacement, and the time were studied also.
