"What is Kyo-Machiya (Kyoto Traditional Townhouses)?" Simply put, it’s a kind of traditional house with long thick shape, which is only located in Kyoto. Same as the "Siheyuan" and "Hutong" stand for the I i v i ng culture of Beijing, "Kyo-Machiya" is a symbol of Japanese traditional living culture, and this is also the reason why I choose Kyo-Machiya as the object of study.The purpose of this paper is to deeply research, andfind out the way to form the "WovenSpace. Woven, in this paper, means a kind of state that the function of space is changed because of the influence of "people’s living culture", "natural envi ronment" and "architectural space", and the "Woven Space" is the space with this state. The "Woven Space"which contacts internal and external environment is the most characteristic part of the "Kyo-Machiya". Its unique opennessbr ings great impact on the way of living, interpersonal relationships, action norms and cultural patterns. Compared to the western architecture which makes the house surround by walls, the "Kyo-Machiya" makes internal and external space fusion. Perhaps, use the method of "woven space" can ease the tension of contemporary architecture. However, what exactly "woven space" is, what kind of culture and life it exists in? We may find out the answer by the study of "Kyo-Machiya" which integration of tradition and innovation.Nowadays, as the manifestation of the living culture, construction technique and "woven space" which response to environmental and human behavior, the open space in the "Kyo-Machiya" is widely concerned. Among this,"woven space" is the space that protect personal privacy while expanding personal life to city life.
