The oil pumping unit motors are the equipments which have large power consumptions in the oil field. However, because of the load varies largely, the high-power motors often tend to drive small-power loads, which leads to the low motor efficiency. Therefore, the transformation of the oil pumping unit motors has a practical significance for oil field energy savings. The Switched Reluctance Motor (SRM), with its advantages of simple structure, high reliability, wide speed range and high efficiency, etc. has attracted extensive attention in the field of electric drive. Applying the SRM to oil pumping unit can improve system efficiency and achieve energy saving goal. Through the control of numerous control parameters and flexible control modes of the SRM, different control effects can be achieved. However, with the serious nonlinearity of the SRM, the control difficulties have increased and the applications in real systems have been restricted.This article mainly aims at the study on the SRM control and its applications in the oil pumping unit, the work finished includes the following several parts. The first part has described the basic structure and the working principle of SRM, analyzed the electrical inductance and electromagnetic torque equation of the SRM linear model and non-linear model, and introduced the control strategies of current chopping control, etc. Part two has mainly studied the SRM speed control strategies, and the speed control has realized by adopting the three control methods of PI, fuzzy sliding mode and fuzzy PI. Aiming at the large torque rippling problem of SRM, part three has realized the direct torque control through utilizing the direct instantaneous torque control method and the torque distribution function. In part four, the SRM control strategies has been applied to the oil pumping unit and verified on the test platform.The motor control strategies have been simulated and verified in the MATLAB/Simulink environment. The results show that the speed controller enhances the dynamic response speed of the SRM rotating speed effectively, and the SRM speed jumping can be achieved in a relatively short period of time. In addition, the speed controller suppresses the torque rippling apparently, and the motor performance can be improved obviously. With its excellent speed regulating performance and high efficiency of SRM, the energy saving goal can be achieved by utilizing the SRM as the drive motor in the oil pumping unit system. Through the SRM operation test on the oil pumping unit test bed and the analysis of experiment data, the favorable energy saving effect of SRM has been proved from the aspects of power consumption, efficiency, etc.
