Matting system is a kind of engineer support equipment mostly used to construct roadway through connecting many matting structural units together. It can ensure maneuverability by supporting vehicles to overcome obstacles, such as soft soil terrains, wetlands or mudflat. The existing matting systems are all operated mechanically, although they are with high level of automation, can not accomplish support task well because of being restricted by their basic chassis. Developing modular matting system constructed manually can enhance the capability of roadway support.Conventional matting systems are mostly made of steel or aluminum alloy, which are with high intensity and elastic modulus, as far as these are concerned, there are some differences in structure design between modular matting system and conventional matting system: 1) the modular matting system is constructed manually, its structural units should be lighter and, the operation process should be easier and faster; 2) the structure design should be considered about the material characteristics sufficiently, especially should be focused on the under stress response of the whole matting system and the load capacity of structural units; 3) the analysis model of structural computation should be similar to the actual performance state of the matting system and, compute results should serve as a guidance for the designing work.In this project the sorts, characteristics and molding mode of polyurethane have been researched, material and structure molding technique have been selected to utilize on designing modular matting structure. And then, structure design of the modular matting system has been conducted; the connecting method of matting system has been optimized and confirmed. Lastly, the designed structural units have been analyzed by finite element method, the influence of the structural units'size and material's elastic modulus on the modular matting structure have been researched, and some structural optimized design methods for the modular matting system have been suggested.In this project, polyurethane has been applied to the matting structure, the structure of hexagonal mat and the connecting mode of hamulus-hole locking have been met the design requirement of modular matting system, achieved the research aim, the gained results can be regarded as a reference for the pre-production of the structural units, be validated by real load experimentation.
