Marketplace and the Marketplace Culture, to the citizen as the main form of a subculture in the traditional Chinese culture, though deep-rooted and growing, are throughout restricted and influenced to the community mainstream culture since ancient times, and its content and connotation included are not widely recognized and understood. Time to modern times, as one of the four birthplaces of Marketplace Culture of modern China, the influence of Tianjin Nanshi on the development of Tianjin's modern history can not be neglected. For a long time, the status of Nanshi area was not recognized, and its marketplace space and culture have not gotten an objective evaluation, so as this for a turning point, with the formation of the Nanshi area marketplace, marketplace space and cultural for the surveying object, this paper relies on ancient and modern theoretical cognition and related literature, combines with characteristics of other birthplaces of Marketplace Culture to conduct research, aims at getting an objective description and evaluation of the Marketplace of Nanshi area, as well as demonstrating its particularity of marketplace space and cultural.Firstly, this paper interpretes the concept for the marketplace, and combines with social political, economic and cultural background to describe the origin, development process and the aspects included in different historical periods and characteristics of the marketplace space and cultural. Then through a combination of social factors of modern Tianjin historical development, researches into the process of the formation of Nanshi area marketplace, which contains three aspects that the gathering of citizens, the formation of Marketplace space, and the general characteristics of Marketplace Culture. Secondly, on the one hand makes classified description of the marketplace space of Nanshi area by examples of specific street space, architecture environment; the other hand, introduces the marketplace culture through its various types included, and objectively evaluates its positive and negative aspects. On this basis, by comparison on the formation, development process of the marketplace and marketplace space and cultural with Beijing bridge and Shanghai Old City God's Temple area, this paper summarizes the characteristics of Nanshi area marketplace. Finally, it makes analysis of the origins and the process that the region became downfallen after 1930s to reveal the various reasons result in its extinction today. Through the description, objective evaluation and recall to the Nanshi area, this paper elaborates that as the birthplace of Tianjin modern Marketplace,its great value of the impact upon Tianjin urban space system development and citizens'ideas and activities.
