The comfort level of residential district is an important criteria to evaluatepeople's living standard. With the development in economy and the remarkableimprovement of living standards, more requests are projected on this. People'sincreasingly attention to the harm caused by noise manifest the importance ofcontrolling the sound environment . It is a pressing issue to find out how to controlthe noise level in residential districts.The author first analyzed the mode and thesis of noise transmission in urbanareas, and then factors that effect the sound environment in a residential district , asbuilding height and layout, traffic, public facilities, outdoor sport field, wereanalysized and discussed . Statistical analysis were employed to choose the samplestudy district in Harbin. Residential district as the major object of this study werethen catalogued by building combination and arrangement form into four types:liner-ranged, ring, scattered-point group and hybrid.The acoustic field measurement method and criteria in a residential districtwere discussed. Then both field measure and computer simulation method werecarried out in Minjiang district in Harbin to evaluate the accuracy, reliability anddiscrepancy between the two methodology. Computer simulation to assess the noiselevel was proved to be feasible in this study.This study was based on the noise environment evaluation of Minjiang Districtin Harbin. Then four types of residential districts in Harbin were simulated, whichare liner-ranged, ring, scattered-point group and hybrid. Qualitative and quantitativeanalysis were processed to evaluate their existing sound environment. Differencesamong them were summarized, which mainly reflected on the indices of overall andpartial noise level. In the simulation and evaluation of overall noise level, noiseindices method were taken. Building layout, sections and etc. were simulated anddiscussed as main factors in partial noise environment assessment. The relationshipbetween noise environment and design parameters of residential district were alsodiscussed. Finally, strategies to control the noise in residential district weresummarized to guide future design.
