Distribution network directly provides customers with power supply in power systems,which will be Smart Distribution Network in the future. Distribution network reconfiguration is a part of Smart Distribution Network, and is an important tool to optimize the operating conditions of distribution network.Firstly, the concept and significance of distribution network reconfiguration are respectively introduced.Current situation and development of the methods on distribution network reconfiguration are overviewed.Various methods based on mathematical optimal, heuristic search and artificial intelligence methods are presented separately. And the characteristics of algorithms are analyzed.Distribution network topology analysis and its power flow calculation is a prerequisite for distribution network reconfiguration.Considering radial feature of distribution network topology, distribution network topology analysis based on multiway tree of data structure is proposed. It automatically identifies the change of topology structure to status of branch switch .Power flow calculation is realized by traversal technology of topology analysis, which is the basis of distribution network reconfiguration. Niche Binary Particle Swarm Optimization (NBPSO) Algorithm is proposed to overcome the defect of Particle Swarm Optimization pre-maturity for distribution network reconfiguration.Niche Binary Particle Swarm Optimization Algorithm is applied to solve the network reconfiguration. The reconfiguration for distribution network selects branch switch as control variable, sets Niche Binary Particle Swarm Optimization Algorithm as control method with the information feedback of network losses, and realize losses reduction and Optimal Operation of the distribution network. In view of distribution network switch location in order, the weighted hamming distance is redefined for dividing different niche groups. Different niche groups are optimized using PSO and particles' fitness in renewal groups are adapted by sharing mechanism.The three radial distribution test systems are taken as study systems for performing the test. The results reveal feasibility and efficiency of the proposed method for solving the problem.
