With the development of economic globalization and the growth of Chinese foreign trade volume, container transportation as an efficient mode of transport is developing rapidly. The rapid increase in container throughput gives terminals lots of pressure which brings the container terminal both opportunities and challenges. In order to win in the fierce competition, in addition to enlarge the terminal in the long term, the most important is to make good use of existing resource and to improve the management level of container terminal.Container terminal operating system is composed of several subsystems including berths subsystem, yard subsystems etc. As a major component of terminals, container yard is a zone especially for storing and handling containers, which plays a very important role in reducing the port residence time of the ship. When the ship is arriving, in order to ensure the ship quick turnaround and also the terminal's operation can maintain a high level, the terminal should not only allocate appropriate berth, quay crane resources to the ship, but the more critical is to optimize the management of the yard resources. Especially when the yard resources are relatively scarce, they will become the bottleneck of the terminals. The management level of the yard resources will determine the whole efficiency of the terminal's operation. So how to manage yard resources effectively has become an important subject of many countries and researchers in order to face the new situation. The thesis takes the yard subsystem as the research object, through optimizing the space resource and the machinery resource of terminal yard to improve the whole operation efficiency and service levels. Firstly this thesis optimizes the allocation of space resource. Based on the analysis of the elements which influence the allocation of space resource and the discussing of different storing strategies in container yards, we advance a two-step method to allocate yard space resource in a mixing store condition. Two models are presented in order to balance the operation amount of containers among different areas and bays and minimize the distance between the berth and the yard, and then a numerical example demonstrates the validity of the model. Secondly this thesis optimizes the handling machinery resource. A model is presented to minimum the time of the last gantry crane, and the model is shoveled by genetic algorithm based nearest neighbor strategy (NSGA), a numerical example demonstrates the validity of the model and the algorithm. Finally, It conclude that under the existing resources conditions, through optimizing the space resource and the machinery resource of terminal yard, to the shipper, it can greatly reduce the port residence time, and to the port it can improve the equipment utilization. In a word, it can achieve a win-win to the shipper and the port.
