Offshore crane is indispensable supporting equipment on the offshore platform for oil extraction. Generally speaking, each offshore platform has an offshore crane. The offshore crane is likely to be disabled when the hydraulic system breaks down. However, the causes of the faults of the hydraulic system are very complicated. The conventional method is as follow: The garrison personnel report to headquarter on the land after faults of the hydraulic system occurred. Then technical personnel will be sent to the platform to carry out investigation and work out a corresponding maintenance scheme after coming back to the land. This kind of maintenance method always consumes much time and manpower, and the effect is not always satisfying. Besides, the technical personnel sent to the platform differs in thousands ways, which directly affects the success rates of the technical project. If an effective method can be found by which the possible causes of the faults for the hydraulic system can be prejudged before the technical personnel being sending to the platform by headquarter, the investigation will be more targeted and corresponding fault diagnosis equipment will be taken to the scene, which is likely to significantly improve the success rates of the faults maintenance service for hydraulic systems of the offshore crane.In this paper, simulation models of the main hoisting mechanism of the offshore crane are established based on AMESim, and the validity of the simulation models are verified by experimental test. With the help of these simulation models, research on hydraulic faults of the offshore crane is done and fault diagnosis samples of the actual hydraulic system are educed, which can provide theoretical foundations for repair and diagnosis of the hydraulic system of the offshore crane and lay a solid foundation for the development of the hydraulic fault diagnosis expert system for the offshore crane. Furthermore, a fault elimination method for the hydraulic system of the offshore crane is introduced and compared with the conventional maintenance method, the efficiency and advantage of the new method is also introduced and it provides a new measure for fault maintenance of the actual hydraulic system of offshore crane. In the end, three universal hydraulic simulation models of offshore crane are summarized, which can provide a high-efficient modeling method for hydraulic systems of various crane mechanisms. The method of fault simulation made out in this paper was highly important to confirm failure mechanism of hydraulic system to offshore crane and develop fault diagnosis expert system of hydraulic system. Application cases also proved the scientificity of that method. Meanwhile, modeling method for universal simulation model of cranes' hydraulic mechanism was suggested, whose high efficiency was also testified in the engineering practices.
