As one of the most important hydraulic control valves, poppet valves are widely used in cartridge valves, two-way cartridge valves and other traditional non-cartridge valves. The characteristics of valve flowrate, flow force and dynamic response are closely to the precision and stability of hydraulic control system. Meanwhile, some hazards caused by the valve throttling, such as temperature rising, cavitation, etc., will also affect the application of poppet valves. Thus, the study of the above characteristics and harms of throttle has important significance and engineering value.Based on the study of different poppet valves' structure in current hydraulic valves, the similarities and differences have been compared, the key issues in the research of poppet valves have been discussed. Also, the calculation methods of poppet valves' flow gain, fluid resistance and flow force is studied.The poppet valve with long poppet surface core and right angle valve seat is taken as a specific object. The model of this specific object is built based on hydraulic system simulation platform, and the static and transient characteristics, the influence of different spring stiffness and pre-stress on the steady state and transient response is analyzed.On the simulation of flow in the poppet valve, the flow fields of different states are obtained. Especially, the velocity field and pressure distribution of different states, in steady state and the valve's core moving state, are visuable. According the simulations, the easy-cavitation region, negative pressure, temperature rising of the core and the flow force are analyzed. The conclusions give potent support for the design and application of poppet valves.On the basis of the theoretical analysis and simulation of poppet valve, the structure of specific poppet valve is modified. The flow characteristic of the modified poppet valve is improved, and the cavitation is reduced.
