Smart substation is the strong base of building smart grid, and it is the source of collecting the date of power system and the command execution unit, It is contained in the whole process of building and running the smart grid. There is a high precision time synchronization requirement of the second power equipment for the security and stability of smart grid, various types of secondary systems is inseparable from a more precise time synchronization.This parper studies on the time synchronization network of smart substation. First, in summary of progress on the basis, it explains the concept of smart substations, analyses the features and the technical content of the smart substation; secondly, give a brief introduction to IEC61850 and analyse the time model and synchronization model of the smart substation on the basis of the IEC61850; thirdly, several synchronization methods and systems used at home and abroad are summarized and analyzed, and get some shortages of these traditional synchronization methods and some characteristics of these systems, especially IEC 61588, this parper describes its characteristics, principles, structure and background. Finally, several synchronization projects are proposed, and introduce the IEC 61588 network synchronization to the smart substation, and select the most optimal projects of the smart substation from economy aspect and reliability aspect.
