As a modern important vehicle, Automobile has become one of the indispensable parts in our daily life. But the velocity of the automobile traffic accident is higher and higher along with Sharp increase in the number of cars, the improvement of automobile's performance and the condition of the roads. The traffic accidents not only cause the enormous economic losses but also bring great threat to the people's safety. So the study of automobile collision's issues safety becomes a question which can't be ignored. Face collision rates more than 50% among all the traffic accidents, also the largest of its harmful. As one of typical thin walled structure, the front side rail plays an important role to ensure a car having good front crashworthiness. Therefore, the study of front side rail in the process of energy absorption characteristics makes significant for improving the safety of vehicle collisions. This article is based on the dynamic nonlinear explicit finite element methodFirst of all, this paper uses the GSD module of CATIA to establish the three-dimensional solid model according to the size of a car's front side rail. Then import it into Hypermesh to establish the integrated finite model of the rigid wall and front side rail by the format of IGS, also mesh the model. The article briefly introduces the model's reasonable simplification and how to check the girds quality. In addition, Definition of material parameters, process of contact and weld and adding constraint and border condition are agued. Export K file after that. Secondly, using ANSYS/LS-DYNA to solve the model, and we can get dynamic responses of the front side rail by HyperView and HyperGraph, which summarizes the conclusion that the crashworthiness is bad by analyzing its deformation, the acceleration of quality centre, and so on. So the paper mainly focus on the structure of the front rail and offers two optimization methods which is open V guide slot and the weakening hole, add the strengthening board in the curving place. Finally the simulation results and analysis show that the crashworthiness of the improved front rail is enhanced. The research method and results of this paper have practical application value and direct guidance significance for the front side design.
