Along with the development of the society and economy in recent years, Chinese economic life has become more active. In the area of city construction, extensive infrastructure construction has reached to a new historical stage. It is a stage changing from seeking for quantity to seeking for quality. A lot of city squares, public space and comfortable living neighbourhood have sprung up. The modern landscape garden design in China is unprecedented prosperous. And with social development, the functions and service objects of modern landscape garden also changed a lot. The methods and forms of Chinese traditional landscape garden cannot meet the needs of the development of modern city. Therefore, how to inherit and develop traditional landscape garden basing on new social background and new functions has been the problem for landscape garden designers to think about and provide answer urgently and it is inevitable.Classical Chinese landscape gardens were beautiful and elegant. Everything in these gardens expressed beauty of delicacy and mildness, and it could be magnificently conceived, making people the most impressive. But the idea of being open and directing at the public in modern western garden design also brought forth a brand new concept for us. It focuses on the combination of form and function, brief composition, and free arrangement. It has abundant design skills and can build out modern space. However, modern western garden is the product of western economy and culture, which always lacks of profound message and the unique sense of space of eastern garden. But classical Chinese landscape garden has its own limitations, too. It mainly concerns with building small space, prefers details more than others. And these small-scaled spaces were closed and have sole function, which cannot fit for the current social background of China. Thus, a problem comes up: in design, are the form, composition, arrangement and whether they are harmonious and beautiful important, or the historical and cultural meaning, space spirit, and artistic concept of the space more important? It can be supposed that, if we view simply and directly the former as ideas of modern western landscape garden, and view the latter as those of traditional Chinese category, then we should combine both of them in design. So in fact the problem is whether modern concepts and tradition can be jointed in modern Chinese landscape garden design. How to reflect the unique spiritual concept of our national culture in design? How to build modern landscape circumstances for modern people? Therefore, this thesis aims to search and prove how to joint tradition and modern ideas in landscape design. And the Eighty-one-Southern-and-northern-courtyard design project of Kaifeng Jianyedahong Company will be the main example used in this paper.
