Abstract/Summary:
Modern architecture in China stemms from the semi-colonial and semi-feudal society. Although it is just of an over-100-year old history, it has played as the linkage and bridge of the old and new architecture; it has been the collision and mixture of the Chinese and Western culture. The modern architecture bears great research value. Architecture is a reflection of the culture, while architecture, acting as the carrier of culture, interprets culture from different angles. Architecture and culture are mutually complementary related to each other. Modern architecture is the product of the collision and fusion of Chinese and Western cultures. With a history of more than 170 years, mass communication and conflict of the Chinese and Western culture began during the opium war. It is inevitable for two cultures to collide and integrate when they meet. As the carrier of culture, traditional Chinese architecture was greatly influenced by the then Western architectural culture. The traditional Chinese architecture form was affected by many fresh and strange architectural form. At that time, there turned up forms of architectures, such as Gothic, Baroque, Los cocoa, classical type, Russia type, and Japan type, etc, as a result, this brought into appearance the coexisting situation of traditional Chinese style, Western style and Chinese-Western style architectures. After the Opium War, due to the massive invasion of Western culture, there appeared contradictory process of integration and collision of Chinese and Western architectures. This contradiction was reflected through two sides, with one side the advanced western technology and its differential architectural style; the other the China's adherence to doctrines of traditional thoughts and fixation of the traditional architectural culture. In the backdrop, collision and fusion of Chinese and Western cultures engendered the modern Henan University architectural complex, and also became the source of this article. The backdrop of this article is the special history period when China entered the semi-colonial and semi-feudal society.
