In this article the characteristics and development history of privacy of Chinese scholar-bureaucrat are fully studied. The aims of the study is reached, so it helps us understand the inner relationship of Chinese traditional culture and Chinese classic garden and in which way they affect each other; it also helps us understand the taste of the art of landscape architecture and its development in certain times. The article also puts forward some ideas that are worthy of consideration, is also redound to combine the artistic conception and the modern way of gardening in order to inherit and innovate it. The results are as follows:1. The study of characteristic of privacy of Chinese scholar-bureaucrat in Chinese classic gardens shows:The Chinese scholar-bureaucrats are willing to build gardens that are natural in order to help them relax and stay away from the pressure of officialdom. As a view of world, privacy is the emancipation of spirit and freedom. So, Chinese scholar-bureaucrat become free and independent by upholding privacy is a ordinary phenomena is Chinese ancient culture.2. The study of development history of privacy of Chinese scholar-bureaucrat:(1)Han dynasty is the budding period of privacy of Chinese scholar-bureaucrat. The Chinese scholar-bureaucrats are deeply influenced by Chinese traditional culture. They are very knowledgeable, elegant and sensitive.(2)Wei and Jin dynasty are the developing period of privacy of Chinese scholar-bureaucrat. In this period, the Chinese scholar-bureaucrat discard their pursue of money and power and live in countryside to keep their moral integrity and freedom. The congeniality of country life expresses the high morality of Chinese scholar-bureaucrat.(3)Tang and Song dynasty are the flowering period of privacy of Chinese scholar-bureaucrat. The scholar-bureaucrat all take part in and enjoy garden building. Under the influence of the cultural and social atmosphere, the landscape architecture begin to mature and show its most conspicuous character—the taste of privacy.(4)Yuan dynasty is the turning period of privacy of Chinese scholar-bureaucrat. The scholar-bureaucrats barely made any famous garden in this period of time. (5)Ming and Qing dynasty are the prosperous period of privacy of Chinese scholar-bureaucrat. A lot of scholar-bureaucrats live in their privacy. Leading a natural life becomes their spiritual bailment. Free and peaceful life leads to the spiritual sublimation of scholar-bureaucrats. They free their spirit by remembering and meditating their past.
