Based on the theory of creative city, this paper expanded the relationship research between the city and universities. Considering the impact of university resources, spatial elements and the effective organization mechanisms are discussed. Then according to the surrounding area of Zhejiang University in Hangzhou, corresponding optimization recommendations were raised. In the context of knowledge economy and globalization, creative cluster area around universities is shaping urban space. Spatial analysis from urban planning perspective is important.Firstly, theories and constructions concerning creative cluster area around university were reviewed. A basic cognition and reference points about creative cluster area was sorted out.Secondly, considering the demand of the main participants, "University Resources", "Business Breeding", "Creative Cluster" were regarded as research priorities. Then the spatial characteristics and future trends were proposed.Thirdly, creative cluster area around Zhejiang University was studied as a demonstration. Spatial needs analysis was made based on questionnaire. Then, drawing on elements of urban design theory, active "intelligence sources", stable "net output" and flexible "exchange domain" were summarized as the three basic spatial elements. The three form an effective organization through the "matching release" and "self-reinforcement" process. It is suggested that the efficiency among organizations should be ensured as well as the importance to the construction of elements attached.Fourthly, the optimization recommendations to the creative cluster area around Zhejiang University were suggested based on development and comparison among existing spatial designs using the space elements and organization study.
