Landscape is closely related to human beings by improving the living and environmental quality. However, during garden constructions nowadays, while satisfying the requirements such as outward appearance, the utilization of water resources is so irrational that the water protection is being overlooked. Since the water shortage has created far-reaching global concerns, under the concept of global sustainable development, the design of landscape should also be sustainable, especially in terms of rational utilization of water resources.This thesis proposes the water-saving technologies that will help promoting the sustainable development for the construction of landscape gardens.In recent years, there has been significant achievements in studies on water-saving landscape in China and overseas. In China, the water-saving technologies being applied in garden design are still in their beginning stage, and the construction of water saving gardens is limit to the collection and utilization of rainwater, with much general advocation but lack of systematic research. Based on specific water-saving strategies applied in China and overseas, we conducted extensive investigations on the gardens in Hangzhou City, statistically analyzed the city's common vegetation types, their tolerance to drought, their resistance, and so on. Our investigations have been carried out according to the form and material of pavement in the gardens of Hangzhou City, the modality of virescence and irrigation, collection of rain water and the utilization of reclaimed water, etc. , on the basis of water resource saving.In this thesis, focusing on the above aspects, we proposed strategies, which are beneficial in designing water-saving gardens, in terms of: water saving in the roof, the permeable pavement choice, the green depression, the constructed wetland and so on for more productive use over rainwater; the selection of drought tolerant vegetation type, rational allocation of these vegetation to form,stable, drought tolerant, reversible, and sustainable plant community; the use of new water-saving and irrigation technology, the integration of reclaimed water utilization system with into the existing surrounding systems as well as the utilization of water-saving,maintenance and management measures.Through the analysis and research in the water saving in gardens of Hangzhou City, this thesis offers references for the future construction of water-saving gardens to facilitate the sustainable development of landscape gardens.
