The prosperity of world economy brought the rapid growth of liner industry cargo, at the same time, promoting the increase of ships. With the increase of arrival ships, a number of big terminals had been difficult for ships entering and leaving the port timely with a single channel, resulting in a phenomenon of overstock in port, waterway had become a bottleneck affecting the efficiency of port operations. At this time there were surplus capacities for port berths, which did not reach the design capacity. If it was directly extended from single-channel to two-channel, although greatly enhancing the capacity of waterway, but with a huge investment, also may result in a waste of capacity. While the compound channel was a transition channel between the single channel and double channel, which could improve channel capacity as much as possible, and also reduce the engineering investments at the same time. However, how to choose the level of expansion vice channel and make a plan for the compound channel, there is little research, it's a problem for the planning and construction department of the port to be solved immediately. The paper adopts the construction of compound channel to improve the capacity of waterway for the coastal container port. After analyzing the prerequisites for expansion of vice channel and factors which affects combinatorial optimization results, the optimization objectives are created. On the basis of that, detail sub-goals and specific optimization steps are given. This paper proposes an optimization method of grade combination of compound channel for costal container port. Because of the complexity of the ship operating system in coastal port and the studies of channel capacity and service levels are not fully mature, this paper applies system simulation method to study coastal compound channel. This paper also takes the costal container port for example to demonstrate the feasibility of the optimization method, providing a theoretical basis for fairway planning.
