Bus system plays an important role for passenger transportation in metropolis. Improved operation could contribute to increasing transit attraction, enhancing efficiency of passengers, and alleviating traffic congestion. However, little indicators and methods for comprehensive evaluation of transit operation have been found in our country for metropolis. The evaluation methods of formerly research was not systematic and focused either on macroscopic level or over-emphasized details of transit operations, which lead to their incapability to provide practical guidance. Therefore, this thesis aimed to establish evaluation indicators and methods for transit operation based on available data sources, which could provide scientific decision making supports for public transportation management agencies and public travelers.First, average running speed, travel time index, service reliability and transit/auto travel time ratio were chosen as core indicators. Evaluation methods from time dimension and space dimension were proposed and comprehensive index of transit operation based on these four core indicators was designed. The transit operation comprehensive index has been divided into five levels, which have been described relevantly to reflect transit operation comprehensive level. So both details and the whole of bus system can be considered in the evaluation system with core indicators and transit operation comprehensive index.Second, data demands based on established transit evaluation method were analyzed in this thesis. The required data can be classified into four categories:transit lines'basic data, transit operation data, floating car data and passenger-kilometers data. The data quality control method based on departure interval have been developed, which focused on IC card data correction and complementation, aiming at ensuring the data correctness and completeness. Finally, in view of the present situation of transit operation in metropolis, some bus lines of Beijing were chosen in a case study. Their transit operation was evaluated at the line-level, road grade-level, and network-level. The transit operation comprehensive index was calculated and the characteristics of transit operation was analyzed from the perspective of bus line attributes, such as time characteristics, road grade, line length, siting features, average stop spacing and so on. Countermeasures have been proposed from these attributes which influence transit operation.
