The purpose of reactive power optimization for a power grid is to manage the distribution and capacities of reactive power equipments in a most reasonable way to minimize the power loss, while could ensure a constant distribution voltage. A right selection of the position and capacity of the reactive power compensation point may help maintain the voltage and improve the stability of the power grid, avoiding most long distant transmissions of reactive power. Therefore, reduced active power loss and dropped power generation cost could be expected by the reactive power optimization of a power grid.This thesis begins with an extensive literature review of the reactive power optimization technology. Then the research purpose is clarified, which is firstly to identify the shortage of the reactive power system in the power grid of Ping Yang County, then to optimize the reactive power system to reach and finally exceed the power factor qualification requirement established by WenZhou Electricity Board for PingYang County power grid. The PingYang County power grid is detail introduced in Chapter 2, with the focus on the reactive power system.Currently, two methods of reactive power optimization are adopted in the PingYang County power grid:1. The SCADA based reactive power voltage control method for main station system, which is the governing method of reactive power optimization adopted at the PingYang County power grid2. Three reactive compensation methods for sub system:end user accompanied compensation method, transformer compensation method, centralized compensation method in 10kV power lines.The current situation and historical reactive power data of PingYang county power grid are investigated. Various monitoring methods are carried out to record the real time data. Basing on these efforts, compensation methods previously mentioned are compared in technical and managing aspects, leading to the identification of the shortage in the reactive power system of PingYang county power grid. The corresponding modification and improvement form the reactive power optimization scheme for PingYang county power grid.For the future development of PingYang county power grid, two reactive power optimization schemes are proposed:1. Developing a regional voltage and reactive power integrated automatic control (VQC) System for PingYang county power grid, which may be simultaneously controlled with the power grid of WenZhou city and ZheJiang province.2. Developing a reactive control and manage system for both main and sub system.
