The traffic lights are important chain of command which reduces traffic accidents, improves the traffic efficiency and traffic condition. A LED traffic light system controlled by Single Chip Microcomputer (SCM) was carried out to meet the demands for the quick response and high reliability of the traffic lights. It is of practicality value for traffic safety.To satisfy the requests of environmental protection and energy saving for the traffic lights, SCM control based a LED traffic light system scheme is achieved. A kind of constant current driver is designed for the LED luminescence and long lifetime of LED. Hybria series and parallel LED luminous boards were developed. According to the demand of cooperation, RS-485 bus is chosen as the communication bus according to traffic light's demand of cooperating with each other and implementing the work of multi-cross. Control scheme and control software are completed to realize the coordinated control of the traffic light system effectively.Experimental platform of the system is established, and testing experiments were accomplished on the platform. The results of experiments show that the LED traffic lights and the controller satisfied the demands.
