China has already became the biggest country of production of titanium sponge, but not the strongest, who also has big gap with Japan, America and Russia. On the one hand, in China, the high-end sponge titanium cannot reach to mass production. On the other hand, low-end titanium sponge surplus structurally, the quality of titanium sponge and titanium metals produced are poor compare with foreign. Therefore the only choice to improve the quality is that improve the process of titanium sponge, the improvement of titanium industry must speed up without delay.This paper is putting researches on the key process technology which play important role of quality of titanium sponge base on a company’s I type half combined method of titanium sponge production process. The contents are mainly including the level of liquid magnesium affect the quality of titanium sponge in reactor, the feeding speed of purity TiC14 affect the efficiency of reduction reaction and the quality of titanium sponge, the temperature and pressure control affect the normal operation of reduction reaction, the key impurity elements like Fe, O, N, Cl, Mn affect the HB of titanium products, while this paper also provide measurements to reduce the impurity elements in industry production. This paper leads a significant meaning to improve the reduction process and technology, understand optimize parameter of production process, reduce the impurity of titanium sponge, improve the quality of titanium and achieve stable industrialized production of high quality titanium sponge.This paper confirms the control conditions in reduction process, and obtains the following conclusions:(1) In reduction reactor, when the level of liquid magnesium is controlled zone II and the reaction zone is controlled zone I, the efficiency of reduction reaction is high and the quality of sponge is better.(2) The efficiency of reaction is high and the quality of titanium sponge is better when the temperature in reactor zone I is controlled between 755℃ and 775 ℃; zone Ⅱ between 770℃ and 790 ℃; zone III between 820℃and 840℃ and zone IV between 830℃ and 850℃.(3) The quality and efficiency of titanium sponge are higher when the pressure of reactor is controlled between 5 and 30kPa.(4) Controlling the key impurity elements plays an important role to improve the quality of titanium sponge.
