The lock is a derivative of private property, which has the function of safety and protection as a practical object. The Craftsmen show the practical function up completely. After the private ownership came into being, people began to have the desire for safety. When there were more and more remaining items and more and more private property, people had an urgent need to have such a thing as the "lock" to protect the safety of their private property and themselves, thus avoiding the occurrence of disasters and misfortunes and seeking a stable life. With private ownership, the lock came into being. With the development of society, the progress of the times and the advancement of science and technology, people's ideas have changed. The only practical function of the lock has failed to meet the growing spiritual needs of the people, so it has a symbolic significance, which associates closely with not only the production and living but also with the politics, social system and customs. In a feudal society the lock was a tool to pass the ideas for the ruling class or even a tool for the political system. It was a carrier reflected the people's aesthetic ideas and concept of good luck. A small lock contains thousands of information related to technology, design, concept, and deeper social and cultural information. It opens a window for us as we study social environments in different ages. There are wide variety and diverse modeling of ancient Chinese locks, which not only give a sense of beauty for us to enjoy but also bear a deep cultural heritage, revealing the difference of the outer social environments and the inner ideas in people's hearts in different historical periods. The feudal society had the strict hierarchy, so there was the class lock to distinguish the different classes of different people; in Ming and Qing Dynasties people liked appreciating antiques, so the locks with written words appeared, which were the favorites of the literati; because of the powerful role of spiritual strength, the longevity locks and fancy locks appeared, which were with diverse styles and various shapes. American psychologist Abraham Maslow thought that the needs of human beings is a pyramid-increasing process and from the bottom to the pinnacle of the pyramid are physiological needs, safety needs, social needs, respect needs and self-realization. It can be seen that the needs of people gradually develops from the material aspects to the spiritual ones. The emergence and evolution of the lock had a close relationship with different needs of people.Through a lock, we can understand the social systems, economic development, customs and people's ideas and aesthetic psychology in different times from its external shape and the decorative patterns and auspicious words on the surface of the lock. Different locks have different methods to open and we can not only recognize the powerful "protection" function of the lock but also gain a lot of educational significance, such as the suggestions for our behavioral style, the contemporary education and the marriage.
