With the rapid development of science and technology, especially the development of computer technology, numerical control technology and systems have developed rapidly. The traditional manufacturing industry has undergone fundamental changes, from the exclusive, closed, open loop control mode to the common, open, real-time dynamic, closed loop control mode of development, advanced manufacturing technology is towards flexible and intelligent direction.Many kinds of information needed to be passed while the numerical control (NC) system is running. The system need communication mechanism to pass command and status which can be used to identify and handle for the system, good communication mechanism is the guarntee of the system stable operation. Timely and accurate transmission of information can ensure the system to make the right moves according to the actual situation; hardware and software communication mechanism determines the system architecture, which can reduce unnecessary input; good communication mechanism will facilitate the expansion of system and be of great benefit to the subsequent development.This paper do research and applications about open CNC system communication from both hardware and software. First of all, this paper describe the open CNC system architecture from two aspects of hardware and software. Furtherly, study the communication mechanism use of the real-time control system (RCS) and the RTLinux real-time communication mechanism based on the NC system. This paper research and analyse the NC system message communication between modules, in order to understand the message passing method between modules and extend the communication and information design. Then implementate the NC system to control movement and IO and so on.Finally, according to study of the communication mechanism and the automatic tool changer (ATC) of the NC system, this paper design the transfer and communication method for the the NC system and tool storage control messages, and expand the read and write application of the hardware IO. In the end, we can conrtol the NC system movement and the tool storage, then realize the automatic tool changer function in a software-based method. In order to facilitate operation and enhance the efficiency of ATC, this paper design and implement to jog the tool storage manually, and also realize to select the tool in the shortest path.The research and design of the ATC function is a strong support for the open CNC system. It can reduce the processing of non-cutting time in order to increase productivity and lower production costs. This is of great significance.
