Population-resource-environment crisis has seriously threatened development of human society on several scales. Sustainable development is an important milestone of modern civilization, and also is the target that the mankind is pursuing. Region sustainable development is the foundation of world sustainable development, and also the stage performance of world sustainable development. Nowadays under the situation of economic globalization progress acceleration and international competition increasingly sharping, changing the growth method and pursuing sustainable development is becoming a world current. To evaluate exactly the moderate degree and sustainability of the population, resources and environment of every area has very important meaning for establishing and implementing the sustainable development strategy. Ecological footprint theory was put forward by Canadian ecosystem economist William and his student Wackernagel at the beginning of 90's in the 20 centuries. It is a kind of new method that can be used for calculating the degree of the sustainable development. Nowadays,as one of quantitative assessment tools to measures sustainable development,Ecological footprint(ef) model has gained much attention from international scientists,world's government and non-government organizations.Ecological footprint method is a new method to survey and calculated the level of human making use of the nature resources.Whether the development of a region is within ecological carrying capacity can be quantificationally determined by ecological footprint method; Then the pressure and the influnence extent of human living acticities to the nature can be quantificational reflected.The results of quantitative evaluation by ecological footprtint method.The paper introduces the concept of ecological footprint, the calculational method,the calculational method and the research progress on present dometic and foreign, and take Baotou as an example,calculate the ecological footprint from 2001 to 2007,and analyzed its dynamic change process of the ecological footprint during this period.The result of culculation and analyzation shows that the ecological footprint of Baotou city per person increased from 2.8398 ha in 2001 to 5.1715ha in 2007, The be per person decreased from 0.9355 hm2 in 2001 to 0.7991 hm2 in 2007and the city faced the ecological deficit of 1.9043 hm2 in 2001 and 4.3724 hm2 in 2007. After analyzing the composing of ecological footprint of Baotou city,we found:on the ecological footprint,the proportion of fossil energy sources land was the largest and had increased quickly. As a whole,the above phenomenon shows that the general pattern of economy development in baotou city needs to be further improved.The paper also calculated ecological footprint's diversity, indicator of development capacity, the indicator of ecological footprint pressure and the ecological coordinated index of baotou base on the results of ef calculations,and analyzed the ecological footprints of ten thousaned yuan GDP between 2001 and 2007, the paper clearly demonstrates that the efficience of natural resource use in baotou city was improve. This thesis will lead the ecological footprint theory to the research of regional ecological system, and express the pressure and its degree of the natural ecosystem system using the fixed regional ecological footprints, and carry on a study to regional sustainability further, so to provide reasonable countermeasures for it。that is to say,the model should be transformed from the heat disseminative model to the abstemious model.What is more,the efficiency of resources using should be improved, and abstemious production and consumption model should be advocated,then the ecological footprint can be decreased accordingly,thus the city is hopeful for being ecological city step by step.realizing the continuable development in Baotou is the target pattern of the development of society and economy of the city in the future.
