The previous vertical tailing tank filling system in Fankou Lead-zinc Mine used high-pressure water to make mud, with low concentration of sending salt and being volatile, so that it could not guarantee the filling quality and the filling cost was high. The mass concentration of overflow was very high and tailing utilization was low, because of the high ratio of fine tailings with the development of beneficiation machines, based on engineering fluid dynamics and computational fluid dynamics, and the current unclassified tailings cackfillmg technology, some key technologies of vertical sand tank mud making and overflowing were proposed. These technologies could solve the problems of vertical sand tank settlement and outflow sand process. It could increase utilization ratio, resolve the surface tailings storage and pollution problems, save filling cost. The main study contents and conclusions were as follows:(1)Through the experiment research of tailings settlement characteristics, the paper obtained different settlement characteristics, settlement velocity and settlement concentration with different kinds of tailings. Based on the test of different molecular weight flocculants settlement effects, several conclusions were obtained: the optimal flocculant and molecular weight, the optimal addition concentration, the optimal filling tailings concentration. By settlement characteristic curve, it determined clarification region, free settlement region and concentration region, and their changing rules. These conclusions could provide important basis for technological transformation.(2)By the process of calculating fluid dynamics (CFD)-FLUENT6.2 to numerically simulate the process of sailing settlement in vertical sand tank. By choosing 2d axisymmetric model and setting reasonable calculation parameters, it simulated the flowing process and the regulation of sailing settlement of tailings in vertical sand tank.(3)By research on the theory of partial particulate fluidization, it obtained that fluid pressure was the determining factor of fluidization on mud making in vertical sand tank. And then the technology of wind combining with water mud-making was proposed. A new mud making arrangement technology was given with qualitative analysis of fluidization mud making.(4)A more reasonable sand releasing technology was given based on research of sand releasing mechanism with vertical sand tank, it confirmed the rebuild design and installation of vertical sand tank, which were the controlling system of overflow concentration on the top, the fluidization system at the bottom, the automatic controlling system and guidance of transformation installation of filling system.
