Techniques Of Decoration On Women's Costume In Sunan Watery Region

This paper studies and analyzes techniques of decoration on women's costume in Sunan watery region. Research objects in this paper include two parts, first, Sunan women's costume handed down for generations preserved in Jiangnan University Han Chinese Costume Museum, and costume & the related information acquired by visiting Sunan watery region, second, techniques of decoration on these costume, including interview and investigation of costume makers in Luzhi & Shengpu town, and the view of their making process.This paper, firstly, analyzes the design, fabric and color of Sunan women's costume, illustrates local women's wearing custom and the structure & color features of costume, and verifies that origin and development of Sunan women's unique costume reflects"Rice Cultivation Culture"which represents agricultural civilization.Techniques of decoration such as patchwork, edging, goffering, stitching, embroidering, ornamental string and button loop are analyzed specifically by way of field survey and on-the-spot investigation. The detailed technique process is recorded, analyzed and studied. The costume-making process is recovered, and its features can be summarized in two points, first, the combination of Certainty and Randomness, second, the combination use of textile fabric and fabric odds &ends.Meanwhile, its cultural implications are discussed in great detail. The comprehensive analysis was carried on by the principle of clothing design, clothing construction, and clothing spirit. It is believed that techniques of decoration on women's costume are aesthetic and functional. In other words, they are basic means to beautify costume and to construct design style, which reflect the"aesthetic-functional intergrated"design philosophy.Sunan women's costume is part of Han Chinese Costume. Techniques of decoration on Sunan women's costume are unique techniques formed with"Rice Cultivation Culture"production and life style through trial and error in the long-term development, which reflect local labor women's wisdom and folk culture. The soul of decorating techniques should be carried on and developed.
