With the promotion of the foreign investment, economic development and the demands of market, more and more chemical industry districts have been founded in China. However, the introduction of this new thing brought challenges to the local communities. The chemical pollution and the land expropriation inevitably affects local residents' daily work and life. What are these effects? Will they cause uncertainties to the future development of Chinese chemical industry and cities? The paper will present reasonable analysis based on the study of Shanghai Chemical District and its impact on local residents. In the study, this paper analyses the various impacts of the Shanghai Chemical District on the local residents by questionnaires and interviews. Then it gives some discussion and thoughts on the impacts by integrating theory with practice. The paper is divided into three parts:The first part is the preface. First, it presents the backgrounds and significance of the research and defines related concepts. Then it introduces and reviews the relevant theories and researches home and abroad. Finally, it presents this paper's research ideas, research approaches and innovations. The second part is the main body of this paper. First of all, it introduces Shanghai Chemical District and the general situation of the local communities. What's more, the second part also gives a brief introduction of the process of questionnaire. Second, it analyses the questionnaire and the result shows that: local residents have a little knowledge about the Shanghai Chemical District; the pollution brings tremendous negative impacts on the local people's daily life; the development of the Shanghai chemical industry doesn't increase the local people's general income, but results in the tendency of the Marginalization of local residents; Shanghai Chemical District improves the community's standard of living facilities, but it still has a lot of negative effects.Furthermore, according to the facts of Shanghai Chemical District and China's chemical industry development, the paper deeply discusses five issues including the chemical industry pollutions, marginalization of local residents, compensatory payments to the local communities, city development and globalization. The five conclusions are: given the pollution of the environment, we should think over the future of China's chemical industry; based on the large-scale land expropriation, we should seriously consider the marginalization of local residents; based on damages to living space, we should re-reflect the way of compensation; based on the contradictions of chemical industry and urban development, we should re-examine the future development of city chemical industry; based on the conflict between chemical district and the local community ,we should re-consider a reasonable way for local communities to integrate into the globalization. Finally, in order to weaken negative influences of Shanghai Chemical District and improve the local residents' living environment, the paper raises a number of suggestions. The third part of this thesis is the conclusion. It mainly summaries the paper's research results and shortages, and points out some issues that the further research should pay close attention to.
