Magnetic Abrasive Finishing (MAF) is a new type of surface-finishing method which can achieve the surface finishing of work pieces, by using abrasives in the role of the magnetic field. It is composed of magnetic and magnetic abrasive. By filling an abrasive both have magnetic and cutting abilities in the magnetic field formed by a pair of given pole, the abrasive act on the surface of work piece in the form of pressure under the role of magnetic field, and thus achieving the work piece surface grinding process to achieve burr removal and surface finishing purposes. MAF has a good many processing advantages such as good flexibility, adaptability, self sharpness etc., and shows a huge advantage in surface finishing as well. According to the processing heterogeneity caused by the change of normal vector of surface during surface machining, this paper presented the concept of effective grinding, that is, by changing the parameters (such as by changing machine settings, to make the conformity of magnetic pole to the normal vector of surface; By changing feed rate, to increase grinding time in the areas where the capacity of grinding is weak, etc) to ensure that the consistency of processing effects of each point in the surface during the surface processing.Starting with the principle of MAF, this study gave full consideration to the characteristics of freeform surface magnetic abrasive surface finishing. Based on the detailed study and discussion of technology-related equipment, technology, flexible grinding wheel (pole) and from the overall pursuit of the global optimal, the whole technology system has been improved and developed in order to meet the market needs of magnetic grinding technology and enter the stage of the practical application. In addition, the freeform surface magnetic abrasive surface finishing system, the design and manufacture of corresponding equipment, the quantify system of preparation and abrasive performance indicators, as well as the design and manufacturing properties of magnetic have been studied.Through theoretical analysis and experimental research, the main research contents of freeform surface magnetic abrasive surface finishing could be listed as follows:1. This paper studied the mechanism of freeform surface magnetic abrasive finishing and its application in practical production, proposed the concept of effective grinding to ensure that the consistency of surface processing.2. Based on the electromagnetic theory, this paper systematically analyzed the force condition and grinding mechanism of magnetic abrasive during MAF, then the manufacturing performance of magnetic abrasive and preparation methods of abrasive were proposed.3. The electromagnetic sensors and the shape of magnetic tools of MAF have been designed and calculated.
