The twentieth century witnesses rapid development of science and technology, which has created unprecedented material wealth and spiritual wealth. Meanwhile, human being excessively exploits and utilizes natural resources, which has destroyed ecological balance and brought about a series of problems endangering environmental safety. As a result, there are some contradictions and tensions in the relationship between human and nature. At present, ecological crisis has become a key problem that has something to do with the survival and development of human beings. In order to solve this problem, we can depend on law, economy, science and technology and other means. In addition, we should strengthen environmental awareness of human beings and shape ecological ethics value. For this purpose, scholars in Chinese and western shift their perspective to the traditional Daoism culture.Daoism culture is an important part of Chinese traditional culture, which covers many aspects, has a long history and contains rich ecological thoughts, including integrity concept of object and me, balance concept of knowing laws and harmony, exploitation principle of knowing limitation and satisfaction, equality concept without gentle and simple and so on. It is the common concern of Chinese and western experts to draw lessons from ecological thoughts in Daoism culture to solve the present environmental crisis. However, owing to the difference in cultural background, thought mode and life style, scholars in Chinese and west have different opinions about the research. On one hand, the integrity concept of object and me as well as the organic views embodied in Daoism culture is almost the same as western deep ecology. Therefore, western scholars explain Daoism ecological thoughts by means of deep ecology from western angle, which provides a new angle to study Daoism ecological thoughts. On the other hand, Chinese and western scholars have different explanations and researches on"follow the nature"thought. They have different opinions about whether wuwei is a positive or negative behavior means. On the basis of deep understanding on the connotation of wuwei, western scholars put forward the synergy concept. Moreover, they argue that the synergy between human and nature is of great help to realize the harmony between both and provides the third development mode for us.The deep researches on Daoism ecological thoughts by Chinese and western scholars endow modern value to Daoism. This paper explores modern value of Daoism ecological thoughts from the viewpoint of sustainable development and socialism harmonious society, which not only enriches its content, but also provides some applicable measures for the practice.
