The progress in information technology has brought about great innovations to manufacturing industry. Mould industry is no exception. The application of computer-aided technology in mould process planning can improve its efficiency and quality, help designers get themselves out of annoying routines as well as shorten the preparation period and the whole product development cycle. The principles of CAPP system and its applications have been studied widely in the past 40 years, but these researches mainly focused on the exploration of fundamentals and implementation of some specific type based on some now outdated technologies while lack of considerations of architecture design in practical development of as well as integration of state-of-art technologies into CAPP systems. On the other hand, traditional CAPP systems are mostly based on client/server model which is hard for the systems to install and upgrade, while this is the very advantage of web applications, It implements "zero deployment", that is, clients don't need to be bothered by the installation and configuration any more, but instead just let the server side worry about all of them. What clients need are only a browser and the specific URL of the application. What's more, the emergence and rise of Rich Internet Application and Ajax technologies make the web applications as interactive as desktop applications. To meet the practical requirements in CAPP system development and find out ways to design a flexible architecture to facilitate the development of CAPP systems, this thesis takes press die process planning for example, first analyzes the business process in press die process planning in detail and presents corresponding use case models and analysis models. Then the design and development of press die CAPP system on J2EE are discussed and the system is divided into three layers following the principle of modern software development methodology, that is, presentation layer, business layer and persistent layer. Also, the concept of rule engine is introduced. Finally, the open source software Laszlo, WebWork, Spring framework and iBatis are used to build a web-based press die CAPP system prototype based on the architecture designed, which indicates that the technologies used here are advanced as well as feasible.
