Urban fugitive dust is one of the urban pollution sources of influencing air quality, degrading atmospheric visibility and endangering citizens' health. Except for the fugitive dust from wind erosion, urban fugitive dust is principally from human activities, such as vehicles running on the paved and unpaved roads, handling and transportation of storage piles, heavy construction operations and so on. As Shanghai is one of the most famous metropolis in the world, it is urgent to establish the measures for control and management and to resolve the problem of urban fugitive dust.The research area of this study is Shanghai for large scale and Wusong Industrial Estate for small scale. In this thesis, the method of AP-42 provided by EPA, the data information, investigation and sampling in site was used to estimate the fugitive dust emission inventory of paved roads, storage piles and heavy construction operations in Shanghai and Wusong Industrial Estate. One of parameter in AP-42, k, particle size multiplier, was corrected by using the results of Aerodynamic Particle Sizer. The spatial distribution of fugitive dust in Shanghai was obtained by using the method of spatial statistics. The Aerodynamic Particle Sizer and the Laser Particle Sizer was used to analyse the particle size distribution of silt loading. The transition equation was established between the two instruments of particle size. The content of heavy, the character of spatial distribution and the judgement of sources were analyzed by using the ICP-AES and AAS.The main conclusions of this study can be summed up as follows.1. One of parameter in AP-42, particle size multiplier, was corrected by using the results of Aerodynamic Particle Sizer. The results showed that the particle size multplier of PM2.5, PM10, PM15 and PM30 in Wusong Industrial Estate was 1.4,4.5,5.5 and 9.8g/VKT, respectively. The particle size multplier of PM2.5, PM10, PM15 and PM30 in Shanghai was 1.0, 4.2, 5.5 and 10.3g/VKT, respectively.2. The total fugitive dust emission of paved roads, storage piles and heavy construction operations in Shanghai was 462 thousand tons in 2003, in which the emission of PM10 was 210 thousand tons. The total fugitive dust emission of paved roads was 219 thousand tons, in which PM2.5 and PM10 accounted for 9.1% and 40.2%, respectively. 80.6 thousand tons fugitive dust was emitted from the storage piles, in which PM2.5 and PM10 accounted for 11.2% and 39.1%, respectively.
