As a vital component in shoe production, last is an important mold. Yet in Most shoemaking corporations, shoe-lasts have been merely designed by handcraft so far, and machines producing shoe-lasts are simply mechanical copiers. The process itself limits shoe-last industry development due to higher cost, longer cycle as well as lower quality. However, the reform to apply CAD/CAM technologies into shoe-last design and manufacturing, will hence change traditional shoemaking greatly, shorten manufacture cycle, and improve quality of lasts. At present, the shoe-last surface is rather complex and it costs much to inspect. Once adopted in each step of last production, the existing software requires more investment in capital and a longer time in processing together with a skillful operator, from collection and dealing of shoe-last measuring data, tool position calculation, digital simulation, to creation of NC program. Thus a shoe last inspecting and manufacture integrated system is exploited to solve such problem. The system realizes all inspecting and machining on CNC machine tools. With exploited easy-using shoe-last CAD/CAM, it has shortened shoe-last design cycle greatly to add its application value.This paper, then, firstly summarizes domestic and international current situations of last designing and manufacturing mentioned in the above paragraph, and points out the imminence to improve traditional shoemaking with advanced manufacture technology. After introducing numeric machining technologies, the author puts forward a total design scheme, marking emphases and difficulties in system development as well. In the following part, the paper analyses on-line inspecting technology on CNC machine tools, discusses the feasibility of inspecting shoe-last and builds a shoe-last surface inspecting model.Secondly, the paper analyses CAD/CAM technologies in last-making industry, and builds shoe-last 3D model with discrete modeling method. In addition,this paper adopts Database classifying shoe lasts and builds a perfectly systematic environment for shoe-last CAD/CAM. It also analyses algorithm model of shoe-last tool position. Algorithm model applies sphere tool, the most popular in processing curved surface nowadays. Furthermore, the author puts forward"one-time approach method"as the theoretic foundation for the algorithm of tool position so as to greatly increase the algorithm efficiency.
