Flue gas desulfurization (FGD) by using carbon materials is one of the promising FGD technologies. To broadly popularize this technology, it is very important to development new manufacture process of activated carbon, which can be very helpful to lower the producing cost and to enhance desulfurization performances.In this paper, carbonized chars which were sourced form waste of manufacturing furfural were selected as starting material and C02 was chosen as activation agent. The activation process was performed respectively by electrical heating and microwave heating and it is the first time to use microwave energy for preparation granular activated carbon which is use for FGD. At first, influence of parameters such as activation temperature , activation time, flux of C02 are examined in orthgonality experiment and respectively examined further. Then, the desulfurization performances of these granular activated carbon (GAC) have been examined in simulated flue gas. To study the difference between the two heating modes, N2 adsorption at 77K, SEM, chemical titration are used for samples characterization.The results show that:1. The desulfurization performance of activated carbon produced by microwave heating is similar to that by electric furnace.2. Flue gas desulfurization capacity was found to be depend on other properties or mechanisms such as surface chemical nature of the carbon rather than its physical porous properties.3. Among all types of surface chemical groups, There are more alkali groups which help to adsorbing S02 than acidic groups.4. The importance of factors which affect activation process are ranked as activation temperature- flux of C02 activation time , in the sequence of adsorption capacity in the form of iodine numbers.
