This thesis has discussed Chinese traditional patterns' theme, creating methods and the application in today furniture and interior design through analyzing and inducing large quantity of pictures and writing datum. The essence of traditional patterns is to create an auspicious ambience, eliminate various kinds of national taboo by using beautiful patterns and models, and place people's praying for happiness and auspicious. The common methods of creating traditional patterns are symbology, homophony, substitution, composition, using traditions and stories and using the nature themes. In order to use traditional patterns in today design, we should reform them by simplification, exaggeration and abstraction. Through these transformation, the traditional patterns are endowed with new conception and form, and they will become to fit for the modem aesthetic and using. The primary application of using traditional patterns in modern design is to use the original form, and not to modify too much. The junior application is to modify the patterns before using by simplification, exaggeration and abstraction. The senior application is to summarize the shape and personal aura of traditional patterns.
