Throughout history, there is a close relation between people and animals. With the continuous development of the society, animals have infiltrated into various fields of culture. In the modern society, people think that animals own some special meanings. In some areas of Chinese and Vietnamese culture, some customs still remain, such as sacrificing animals to the god and informing animals of marriage and funeral. In mythology, animals were found many times representing part of the human nature. It can be said that on animals rich culture connotation is placed which is inseparable from the country's history background, social life, customs etc. Therefore, to know a nation's culture, it is necessary for one to get knowledge of the animal culture of the nation. Because of different cultural backgrounds, the animal cultures differ. This thesis will make a comparison of the connotation of animal culture between Chinese and Vietnamese with an aim to explore the differences and similarities and to find out the hiding meanings, so as to offer readers a further understanding of the culture of Vietnam. This thesis also makes a study of the connotation of Vietnamese animal culture and the translations of some related animal words, in order to reveal the relationship between animal culture and cross-cultural communication and enhance the readers'inter-cultural communication effectiveness.
