Rhizoecinae belongs to Hemiptera,Coccoidea,Pseudococcidae,which attack the roots of host plants by sucking plant fluids.The subfamily contains of 234 species(including 3 new species) and is disbributed throughout the world.This paper includes two parts.In the first part,definition,taxonomy and phyletic series,geographic distribution,biology and significance,and research history of the subfamily Rhizoecinae are briefly reviewed.The terminology and its significance in taxonomy are also introduced.In the second part,we describe 18 species in 5 genera of Rhizoecinae from China,including 3 new species:Ripersiella nicotiana Liu & Wu(2008),Ripersiella plurostiolatus Wu & Liu(2008),Rhizoecus tricirculus Wu & Liu(2008);and 3 new China records:Geococcus lawreneei Williams(1969), Ripersiella callis(Williams,2004) and Ripersiella carolinensis(Beardsley,1966).For each species, literature cited,description of morphology,host,distribution,and characteristic pattern are given. Material of most species studied is presented as well.Material studied is deposited in the Insect Collections of Department of Forestry Protection,Beijing Forestry University.
