Panchaetothripinae is the second largest subfamily in Thripdae(Thysanoptera: Terebrantia), which includes 42 genera and 142 species in the World. Most species of the group are restricted in distribution to the tropics and subtropics. They mainly live and feed on plants, some of them are important thrips pests of agricultural crops and forest. Furthermore, this subfamily is one of most bizarre groups in external morphology within the order Thysanoptera. Therefore, the Panchaetothripinae is not only a vital grop for studing Thysanoptera taxonomy and phylogeny, but also having an important economic significance. This study reviews the the brief taxonomic history, the biological characteristics, economic importance, and identification features of the Panchaetothripinae; provides the distribution information of each species. Main results as follows:1. Identification keys are presented for 13 genera and 37 species of the subfamily Panchaetothripinae in China. 4 new species and 3 new records of the Panchaetothripinae from China are described and figured. Information of geographical distribution and host plants for each species, comparisons of the similar species are also invoved.2. Four new species of Panchaetothripine are described and illustrated from China. Caliothrips gradatus sp. n. is diagnosed by the forewing brown at fork of veins and gradual fading forward. Helionothrips lushanensis sp. n. is distinguished from its congeners by the stout antenna, antennal forked sense cones on segment IV reaching middle of segment V, abdominal tergites VIII posterior margin with complete comb, male abdominal sternites without pore plates. Helionothrips rugatus sp. n. is characterized by the winkles in reticulation on the head and thorax, fore wing dark brown with subbasal and subapical pale band. Panchaetothrips bisulcus sp. n. can be distinguished from other species of the genus by antennal sense cones on segments III and IV long and forked.3. Caliothrips quadrifasciatus(Girault), Helionothrips minutus Wilson and Phibalothrips rugosus Kud? are newly recorded for fauna of China. Astrothrips chisinliaoensis Chen was previously recorded from Taiwan, is here newly recorded from mainland China. Helionothrips errans(Williams), previously recorded from mainland China in literatures, is considered as a misidentification of Helionothrips annosus Wang which is here in the new record species for the mainland China. In addition, Caliothrips insularis(Hood) and Caliothrips fasciatus Pergande, previously reported from China, areteated as the misidentification of Caliothrips tongi Mound, Zhang & Bei.
