Each winter ,some river and lake running in the cold area will be covered by ice sheet .Large number of floated ice will gravely threaten the water conservancy project structure situated on the lower reachs of the river in the next spring. Sometimes the riverway will be blocked and even ice dam will come into being.The mechanic character of ice is studied firstly in this paper. Consequently, 5 ice breaker projects used for selection is designed , considering the practical condition of a dam . The mainly discussed fields in this paper are listed as follows: calculation and confirmation of the extreme force of the environment ; the theory of the interaction between ice and column as well as the comparation and selection of the correlated ice formular calculation ; the theory of the interaction between ice and inclined structure as well as the comparation and selection of the correlated ice formular calculation ; undermined ice load effected by non-simultaneous failure of ice ; concise instruction of icebreaker and other method used for breaking ice sheet.At last , a feasible project is definited , based on deep analysis of the comparation of each suggested project and the result of the formular calculation .
